Assessing of soil water content properties change in a soil irrigated by Isfahan sugar beet industry wastewater

Abstract: Irrigation with industrial wastewater is commonly used in Iran but there is no evaluation on the effect of the wastewater on soil physical and chemical properties. Beside the wastewater quality is different from a factory to another one and consequently the effect is different. In this research the effect of a sugar beet industry wastewater was assessed on the soil water content properties in eastern Isfahan plant in summer 2005. There are some biological and chemical loads in the sugar beet industry wastewater which could potentially affect on soil, plant and subsurface water. The effect was evaluated on most important soil water content points such as saturation percent (SP), field capacity (FC), permanent wilting point (PWP) and total available water (TAW). The design was fully randomized with three replication and three treatments. The treatments were: 1- normal water, 2- 50% sugar beet wastewater and 50% normal water and 3- 100% sugar beet wastewater. The experiments did in the field but in a column with a 110 and 400 millimeter diameter and height, respectively. The water added to soil by surface irrigation during 12 irrigation events with a constant volume and period. Base on the result, the SP, FC and PWP value were 46.5, 35 and 15 respectively in the beginning of the period for all treatments (initial condition). At the end of the period, the values changed to 47, 36.6 and 17.5 for treatment no.1. It also increased significantly to 48.5, 37 and 18.7 for the treatment no.2 at the end of the period. Increasing of soil organic matter (OM) and soil aggregate stability during the period are expected to be the main factor for this behavior. Although the FC and PWP parameters are increased during the period but the result shows that TAW decreased significantly from the 20 to 18.5 percent. The least result could be considered as harmful effect of the wastewater on soil. The other effects of wastewater on soil and leached water quality should be evaluated too.
